Bad weather can lead to new friendships

Have you ever taken the time to reflect on the instances in your life that lead you to meeting new people and developing lasting relationships? In our hectic day to day lives, relationships sometimes come as second nature and we often don't slow down enough to savor the memories of new friendships.  Better yet, we cruise through our weeks, months, and years never really understanding how each relationship in our lives plays in to who we are and where we are today.

Well, this weekend pretty much revived my faith in humanity and all that is right in the U.S.A.  Three great ladies joined my list of new friends and it all happened during the brink of exhaustion while traveling across the U.S.  As we listened to the pilot announce we were returning to the terminal after waiting patiently for this thrice delayed flight, my optimism meter petered out.  After all, it was past 1 a.m. and chances of finding another plane and crew were pretty much out of the question.  As we all piled back in to the terminal and the attendants began to book our morning flights, issue out vouchers for hotels and food, a few people began to talk about getting a shuttle to Lafayette, LA instead of waiting for the next flight.  With our bags checked through and not a single toothbrush between us, I joined a group of Louisiana natives on a voyage from Houston to Lafayette!!

Each lady in the car brought forth a vibrancy that made our trip memorable and loads of fun.  Gina, our driver, was an avid cat and orchid lover as well as a world traveler who shared stories about her journeys and life with multiple kitties. Jan kept us entertained before and during the drive with highlights about her grown children, living in Italy as a student, and caring for rescued dogs.  Luann, whom I met at the charging station in the airport, laughed at our jokes and comments during the drive but also was able to catch a few zzz's during our 3+ hour drive.

From watching an 18 wheeler almost skid off the road to stopping at a convenient store to find we could only order items through a bank teller type of window, we shared plenty of memorable moments.  And as we arrived in Lafayette, we all looked at each other with a mix of relief and excitement. Personally, I was elated to have met such wonderful ladies during my trip home and I think they each felt the same.

This experience isn't unique to us four ladies and it won't soon disappear from my memory as an opportunity to meet and develop new relationships, lasting relationships. May others reading this reflect on the moments that led to new friendships and to have the courage, the audacity to take a chance on others...who knows, you might just end up happier than when you started.
